Who are the best prospects in this year’s NFL draft? The following prospects, for the reasons outlined below, make up the top 100 players in my final rankings for the 2014 class. While these players have varying degrees of physical potential and football skill, all 100 of them have the talent to emerge as very good players from a deep draft class.

2014 NFL Draft Positional Breakdowns: Safeties

The need to be able to stop the run out of nickel and dime defensive packages to match up with spread offensive formations has put the safety position in high demand. Having a safety who can come up and play near the line of scrimmage, but also has the range and instincts to play in single-high looks, goes a long way in being able to field an aggressive defensive scheme.

Two prospects in the 2014 NFL draft in particular offer the ability to perform well in both area, and they received first-round grades as a result.

2014 NFL Draft Positional Breakdowns: Running Backs

Considering the way the NFL has become a passing league, running back is not the highly valued position that it once was. With many successful starting running backs having been selected later in the draft in recent years, many teams are no longer valuing running backs as early-round selection.

First round running backs may be a thing of the past and there is no running back in this class with enough value to warrant a first round selection. That said, there are plenty of players who have the skills needed to be starters or at least be a solid complimentary runner.
