The weekend considered by many around the NFL to be the toughest of the year is underway. All 32 franchises, including the Buffalo Bills, are in the process of making and finalizing difficult decisions as they cut their rosters down to the 53-man regular season limit while Saturday’s 4 p.m. deadline to do so looms.

The Bills released 10 players on Friday, including punter Brian Moorman and defensive tackle Landon Cohen, and placed three others on injured reserve to cut their roster down to 62.

That leaves Buffalo with nine moves still to make by Saturday. One of those moves will be covered by linebacker Nigel Bradham’s Week 1 suspension, which goes into effect Saturday, but the Bills must choose eight others to release or place on reserve lists.

Even then, the Bills’ roster-shaping work won’t be done. It’s likely that the Bills will bring in a number of players cut by other teams, which will force Buffalo to make even more cuts. Additionally, the Bills will both choose from their own released players and scour the waiver wire to build a 10-man practice squad by Sunday.

When the dust finally settles next week and the Bills have their roster set for Week 1, what will it look like and who will join them in practice? There’s still a lot to be determined, but here’s an updated projection following Friday’s latest wave of moves.

The Buffalo Bills have released 12 players in the past two days, first by cutting veteran defensive lineman Alan Branch then making 11 more roster moves Monday, but the biggest wave of cuts will come later this week.

The Bills play their final preseason game Thursday at 7 p.m. against the Detroit Lions at Ralph Wilson, and will then have until Saturday at 4 p.m. to trim their active roster to 53 players.

Which players will survive the next round of cuts? Furthermore, how should the team’s depth chart stack up heading into Week 1? And among the players who will be cut, who are the best candidates for the team’s 10-man practice squad?

Dan Hope’s Final Buffalo Bills Depth Chart Projection

Much has changed since I published my mid-preseason Buffalo Bills depth chart projection. Although that was published just last Thursday, the Bills have played two games since. Last Thursday, Bills fans were full of hope and confidence for the upcoming season. The tone is different one week later: the Bills lost their last two preseason games by a combined score of 65-20, but more importantly, they lost a number of key players to injury.

Last Saturday versus the Washington Redskins, the Bills lost potential starting quarterback Kevin Kolb to a concussion and No. 1 cornerback Stephon Gilmore to a fractured wrist. The offensive line has also taken a big hit in the past week. Starting right tackle Chris Hairston was placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Illness list Monday (ending his season), and top interior line backup Doug Legursky was carted off the field Thursday night with what looked like a serious knee injury.

Those injuries are especially devastating because they hit the Bills at what may be the three weakest position groups on their roster. As a result, there are many wide-open spots on the Bills’ depth chart, which will leave the Bills with more tough-to-keep than tough-to-cut players.
