When the Buffalo Bills hired Rex Ryan in January, one thing was for sure: the Bills weren’t going to play it safe with their acquisitions this offseason. That certainly hasn’t been the case so far—especially Friday—when the Bills agreed to terms with former New York Jets, Seattle Seahawks and Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Percy Harvin, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

At his best, Harvin can be one of the NFL’s most dynamic playmakers. A 5’11″, 184-pound offensive weapon who ran a 4.41-second 40-yard dash at the 2009 NFL Scouting Combine, Harvin has a combination of speed and agility that makes him a big-play threat as not only a pass-catcher, but also as a runner and kickoff returner.

These qualities could make Harvin a big asset to the Bills. As a player who can create yardage for himself with the ball in his hands, Harvin could be highly valuable for an offense that has no great options at the quarterback position, and will therefore struggle to be prolific throwing the ball downfield.

With that being said, Harvin has often been more trouble than he is worth, and certainly qualifies as a high-risk, high-reward type of signing for the Bills.

Expected to have to make some tough decisions in order to free up salary cap space, the Buffalo Bills made one Wednesday afternoon, releasing tight end Scott Chandler after five seasons with the team.

In five years with the Bills, Chandler caught 182 passes for 2,120 yards and 17 touchdowns. For 2014, his 47 receptions for 497 yards and three touchdowns ranked him fourth on the team in each category. Releasing him, however, saves the team $2.25 million in cap room this season, according to Spotrac’s contract data.
