Fresh off their biggest win of the season, as they beat the Green Bay Packers 21-13 on Sunday, the Buffalo Bills are set to get another boost as arguably their most dynamic offensive player, running back C.J Spiller, is being added back to the team’s active roster from injured reserve with a return designation.

After a week of evaluating his progress, Bills coach Doug Marrone announced Friday that will be on the 53-man team and is probable to play Sunday against the Oakland Raiders.

It’s unknown if Spiller will be 100 percent after missing eight weeks with a broken collarbone, or what role he will play in his return to the offense. At the least, he gives the Bills offense—which certainly needs any spark it can get—another weapon to work with in its final two games of the regular season, as Buffalo makes a push for a potential AFC playoff spot.

Ameer Abdullah, who is fourth in the Football Bowl Subdivision with 878 rushing yards after six games in his senior season, is making his case to be the first running back taken in the first round of an NFL draft since 2012.

Abdullah has competition at the position, as Georgia junior Todd Gurley and Wisconsin junior Melvin Gordon also drawing first-round buzz, but he has done plenty to put himself in the conversation through the first half of his final collegiate season.

The Nebraska offense goes through Abdullah, who has proven himself this season as a workhorse who can contribute in multiple capacities.

For most teams, assembling a solid one-two punch of running backs with complementary skill sets is a key factor to offensive success. The Buffalo Bills have done even better, as they have built a four-deep stable of backs that is arguably the deepest and most talented in all of the NFL. The combination of C.J. Spiller, Fred Jackson, Bryce Brown and Anthony Dixon gives the Bills four ballcarriers that are capable of being feature backs or at the very least, solid complimentary backs for most NFL teams.

What are the Bills supposed to do with all of this talent at running back this season and beyond? Here’s what we do know: The Bills want to run the football and when you think they are done running the football, they want to run it some more. Last season, the Bills led the entire league with 546 rushing attempts, 37 more than the next closest team. With an influx of running back talent and power-blocking offensive lineman, it certainly appears the plan is to run the ball as much if not more this season.

At a position where 30 years of age is often cited to be the “magic number,” it’s very rare to see a 33-year-old running back land a contract extension. But that’s exactly what Fred Jackson did with the Buffalo Bills on Wednesday.

According to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Jackson’s extension is for one year, worth $2.6 million with an additional $1 million in incentives. The new deal will keep Jackson, who was slated to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, with the team through 2015.
