Two trends that have held true for the Buffalo Bills in recent years are that they typically draft players who made pre-draft visits to One Bills Drive and that they love to acquire new running backs. Taking both of those trends into consideration, it should come as no surprise that the Bills select Florida State running back Karlos Williams with their fifth-round draft selection, No. 155 overall.

Despite the recent devaluation of running backs in the NFL and on draft day, the 2015 NFL draft’s crop offers many talented runners who can make instant impacts.

Todd Gurley of Georgia and Melvin Gordon of Wisconsin seem to be the consensus top two running backs in this year’s draft, and their talents garner first-round consideration. The third spot, which remains much more inconclusive, should belong to Jay Ajayi of Boise State.

Ajayi, a junior, is the only player in Football Bowl Subdivision history with 1,800 rushing yards and 500 yards receiving in one season. He finished his final season with a stat line of 347 rushing attempts for 1,823 yards and 28 rushing touchdowns, and 73 receptions for 771 yards and four receiving touchdowns.

He performed well at the NFL Scouting Combine, in fact posting comparable measurables to Gordon and Gurley, according to MockDraftable.com.

Ajayi brings a bulky frame to the field, and stands at 6’0″ and 221 pounds.

Although it has to be seen whether a running back will be in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft, in what could be the third year in a row without one, the running back position is among the deepest in the upcoming draft class. There are many ballcarriers who could be selected on Day 2 or early on Day 3 and have an immediate impact on the team that drafts them, and one of them is Minnesota’s David Cobb.

A senior and two-year starter at Minnesota, Cobb has accepted a Senior Bowl invite. According to the Gophers’ official athletics website, Cobb measures at 5’11″ and 220 pounds. His thick legs and overall stocky build fits the mold of him as a player, a north-south runner with power.

Fresh off their biggest win of the season, as they beat the Green Bay Packers 21-13 on Sunday, the Buffalo Bills are set to get another boost as arguably their most dynamic offensive player, running back C.J Spiller, is being added back to the team’s active roster from injured reserve with a return designation.

After a week of evaluating his progress, Bills coach Doug Marrone announced Friday that will be on the 53-man team and is probable to play Sunday against the Oakland Raiders.

It’s unknown if Spiller will be 100 percent after missing eight weeks with a broken collarbone, or what role he will play in his return to the offense. At the least, he gives the Bills offense—which certainly needs any spark it can get—another weapon to work with in its final two games of the regular season, as Buffalo makes a push for a potential AFC playoff spot.
