The Stevie Johnson era is over in Buffalo. The Bills traded Johnson to the San Francisco 49ers on Friday for a 2015 fourth-round pick that can be bumped up to a 3rd.

This article isn’t about the trade or how Buffalo’s offense will look without him in 2014. No, this is about one of the most underappreciated and overcriticized players in recent memory. The majority of fans were positive about Johnson, but there was a small yet vocal group of people who bashed Johnson whenever they could.

As a dedicated Bills fan, I have found myself to be very reflective over the past 13 years.  As the season concluded last year, I wrote down a few thoughts on what I thought would be important steps for the Buffalo Bills to once again become relevant in the NFL.

Let’s take a look at the list, and compare it with the moves that the Bills have made since then. Please feel free to comment on what you had on your wish list, and whether or not the Bills checked those items off!

Weigh in with your thoughts on Buddy Nix’s tenure as Bills general manager! (Photo: USA Today Sports Images)

Buddy Nix’s more than three years as Buffalo Bills general manager came to an end Monday, when he announced his resignation in a team statement. Nix will remain with the franchise as a special assistant, but will no longer be in charge of personnel decisions. Now it’s your chance, Buffalo Bills Draft readers, to weigh in. How would you grade Nix’s tenure as Bills general manager? What were his best and worst decisions, and which will define his time as Bills GM? Will his decision to step down have a positive or negative effect on the Bills going forward? Start the discussion by posting your comments in the thread below the article.

Losing 21-9 to one of, if not the, best team is football is not something to be ashamed of. Unfortunately for the Bills, their early season struggles made it a loss that they couldn’t afford. Now sitting at 3-5, the Bills face a near insurmountable uphill climb to try and secure one of the final playoff spots in the AFC. With a game against the division rival Patriots coming up next week it may not be long before we start to see heads roll for another disappointing season. Of course, if you believe General Manager Buddy Nix, the Bills may simply be content to finish the season and not be considered an embarrassment. Then again, that’s not assured either. (more…)

How the Bills account for Texans DE JJ Watt will be the difference on Sunday (Photo: US Presswire)

By BBD Writer Eric Samulski

On a positive note, the Bills didn’t lose last week. After seeing their playoff hopes take a serious hit after a last minute loss to the Titans, the Bills entered the bye week needing to make a lot of changes on both sides of the ball. Defensive Coordinator Dave Wannstedt was planted firmly on the hot seat, and Chan Gailey wasn’t too far behind. The Bills had been plagued by poor tackling, mismanaged defensive schemes, and poor play from the quarterback position. If they hope to salvage the season they have to come out of the off week and prove that the coaching staff was able to address these critical issues. Even a loss that shows improvement and competitive fire would be a step in the right direction. (more…)
