Buffalo Bills State of the Roster: Defense and Special Teams

The Buffalo Bills defense is currently in a state of flux as defensive coordinator Mike Pettine has left to become the head coach of the Cleveland Browns and subsequently, has pilfered three Bills assistant coaches from last year’s staff, one who had been hired by the Bills earlier this month (Jeff Hafley) and might be on the verge of hiring away defensive line coach Anthony Weaver.

The Bills reacted quickly and hired former Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz to replace Pettine. Though his staff isn’t completely solidified yet, it appears likely that Schwartz will bring his “Wide 9,” 4-3 based defense to Buffalo.

The good news for Schwartz is that he’s entering a kitchen with a well-stocked pantry. Buffalo’s defense was its stronger side of the ball last season, and with only one glaring exception, returns all of its key contributors who, for the most part, look to be solid fits for Schwartz’ scheme.

First Downs and Flags: Post-Mortem of Buffalo Bills’ Loss to Cleveland Browns

Thursday night should be looked at as a lost opportunity for the Buffalo Bills. A streaky game that started with promise ended with the Bills dropping a 37-24 decision to the Cleveland Browns.

The game was there for the taking for the banged-up Bills, who struggled all night to stay healthy and maintain consistency on offense. The game will be remembered by EJ Manuel’s fight to gain some extra yards on a scramble deep in Cleveland territory in the third quarter, which ultimately resulted in Manuel taking a hit and sustaining a sprained knee that will keep him out for “a few weeks.”

As Bills nation collectively gasped with horror when Manuel was injured, Buffalo was left with little offensive talent. Although the Bills finished that drive with a 1-yard Fred Jackson touchdown to take a 24-17 lead, the offense was unable to produce once Jeff Tuel took Manuel’s place in the game at quarterback.

Yet even with a tough loss and the injuries piling up, there were still some positives to take from Thursday’s game.

The Buffalo Bills decided it was time for a changing of the guard when they replaced 12th-year punter Brian Moorman with rookie Shawn Powell three games into the 2012 season.

One year and two weeks later, the Bills have decided to reverse course.

Powell was released Friday, one day following a 37-24 loss to the Cleveland Browns in the Bills’ fifth game of the season Thursday night, a game in which the Bills allowed Browns punt returner Travis Benjamin to gain a whopping 179 yards on seven returns. His replacement is Moorman, whose signing the team announced Sunday.

Bills Update: EJ Manuel Out, Shawn Powell Cut; Others on Way Back and Josh Freeman In?

Thanks to their appearance on Thursday Night Football versus the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night, Friday has been unusually busy with news regarding the Buffalo Bills. The injury-plagued Bills continue to take hits to their team health in their 37-24 loss to the Browns, while the punting unit’s struggles to stop Browns punt returner Travis Benjamin has cost at least one Bills player his job.

EJ Manuel Out “A Few Weeks” with LCL Sprain

The primary concern for the Buffalo Bills and their fan base since Thursday night’s game has been the health of quarterback EJ Manuel, who left the game and did not return after taking a hit to his right knee in the third quarter.

Bills coach Doug Marrone provided some clarity about Manuel’s injury on Friday, defining the injury as an LCL sprain according to the team’s official Twitter account. Marrone said the injury, which will not require surgery, is expected to keep him out “a few weeks.”

First Downs and Flags: Buffalo Bills 2-2 At the Quarter Pole

The jury is still out on who exactly the 2013 Buffalo Bills are. In a long, drawn-out affair that saw several trips to the replay booth, the Buffalo Bills triumphed over the defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens, 23-20, on Sunday.

While I felt Buffalo was slowly letting the game slip away at several times throughout the second half, second-round pick middle linebacker Kiko Alonso stepped up once again and demonstrated that he is a big time playmaker.

A crippled defensive secondary forced Super Bowl MVP quarterback Joe Flacco to throw five interceptions. Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine dialed up pressure, and the offense did enough early to help Buffalo squeak out an important victory.

The Bills sit at 2-2 at the quarter pole of the season, and with games already versus the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens, I feel most fans should feel happy with the team’s results thus far.

The defense demonstrated Sunday why they will receive many of the first down accolades in this week’s “First Downs and Flags.”
