2014 NFL Draft Positional Breakdowns: Quarterbacks

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2014

With a plethora of differing evaluations on the top quarterback prospects, there could be as many as four or as few as zero quarterbacks selected among the top 10 picks of the 2014 NFL draft.

Teddy Bridgewater ranks as the No. 1 quarterback and prospect in this year’s draft class, and the second-best quarterback draft prospect (behind Andrew Luck) since 2001. He is NFL-ready and has the intelligence and skill set needed to be a franchise signal-caller. A team needing a quarterback should not pass on his talent, which is why I feel the Houston Texans should select him with the first pick in this year’s draft.

2014 Senior Bowl: Saturday Standouts and Disappointments

Saturday, January 25th, 2014

Though the 2014 NFL Draft is still more than three months away, Saturday’s Senior Bowl was the last opportunity to watch any top prospects take the field in a fully-padded, 60-minute football game.

The game itself was only one part of the evaluation process that took place this week in Mobile, Ala., and the Senior Bowl itself is just a small part of each participating player’s evaluation. Still, the game gave each prospect playing in it a chance to stand out.

A strong performance Saturday meant little to any prospect who didn’t show the same ability in actual college football games and in Senior Bowl practices earlier this week. A few players, however, further proved their ability from strong collegiate careers and standout practices by making big plays on gameday.

Although the bowl season spotlight shines brightest after New Year’s Eve, few NFL draft prospects will face higher expectations going into their bowl games than Louisville junior quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, the projected No. 1 overall pick should he declare for the 2014 NFL draft, will when the Cardinals (11-1) play the Miami Hurricanes (9-3) Saturday in the Russell Athletic Bowl (6:45 p.m. ET, ESPN) in Orlando.

Bridgewater will certainly be in the spotlight Saturday evening, . His leading wide receiver, DeVante Parker, is another potential early-round draft selection if he declares for this year’s draft as a junior. His quarterback adversary in this game, Miami’s Stephen Morris, is also an intriguing NFL prospect.

Joe Marino’s Senior Quarterback Rankings for the 2014 NFL Draft

The quarterback crop for the 2014 NFL draft will be greatly influenced by the potential early declarations of Teddy Bridgewater (Louisville), Marcus Mariota (Oregon), Brett Hundley (UCLA) and Johnny Manziel (Texas A&M). Among the senior quarterbacks, however, there are two who stand out from the pack: Fresno State’s Derek Carr and San Jose State’s David Fales.

I grade both Carr and Fales as first-round draft selections. The rest of the group combines a mixture of solid physical ability, good makeup and intangibles, but none of them put it all together. (Then again, Drew Brees, Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers weren’t the total package when they were drafted either)

Overall, this year’s quarterback class is much deeper than that of the 2013 NFL draft, which had just three quarterbacks selected in the first three rounds and 11 total quarterbacks selected.

From now until the week before the Senior Bowl, I will be releasing a set of rankings for one position group each week, breaking down the top 2014 NFL draft prospects at each position. These rankings will include seniors only.

This week, we start with the draft class’ top-10 senior quarterbacks.

2014 NFL Draft Prospect Preview: Florida vs. Miami

Friday, September 6th, 2013

Saturday’s game between Miami and Florida features a plethora of NFL talent on the field. There are many great matchups to highlight, but the spotlight will be on Miami senior quarterback Stephon Morris facing at least three NFL-caliber defensive backs in the Gators secondary.

Another intriguing matchup will feature a physical Gators defensive front seven facing a solid Miami offensive line and superstar sophomore running back Duke Johnson. Since Johnson is not eligible for the 2014 NFL draft, my focus will be on six players who have a chance of being high draft selections in May 2014.
