The Buffalo Bills were busy on the field last week, as veterans and rookies alike combined for the team’s mandatory three-day minicamp. We wrapped up the week of minicamp news here at Buffalo Bills Draft, but with minicamp now in the books, we continued to look forward to training camp, the 2014 NFL draft and the upcoming NFL season.

How Tarvaris Jackson’s Release Affects the Buffalo Bills Quarterback Competition

What was expected to be a three-way training camp competition to be the Buffalo Bills starting quarterback has suddenly become a two-man race. The Bills announced the release of veteran quarterback Tarvaris Jackson on Monday night.

After Jackson finished third in another three-way quarterback competition with the Seattle Seahawks last season, the Bills acquired him prior to the start of the season in exchange for a seventh-round pick. Jackson did not see any playing time, however, in his only season with the Bills.

Jackson went into organized team activities as the only returning quarterback from last season’s Bills roster. The Bills’ quarterback roster now consists of one veteran in free-agent addition Kevin Kolb, who signed an incentive-laden two-year contract this offseason, and two rookies: first-round pick EJ Manuel and undrafted free-agent signing Jeff Tuel.

With the NFL Draft now passed, the Buffalo Bills’ roster is unlikely to see many changes heading into training camp. The Bills drafted eight players and added 16 more as undrafted free agents. There is a lot of talent among the 24 rookies and each of the undrafted players stands a good chance to make the roster. With the roster standing at about 90 players, some veterans could have a hard time competing with this fresh crop of players to make the team.

With first-round pick E.J. Manuel likely competing with free-agent acquisition Kevin Kolb for the starting quarterback job, Tarvaris Jackson looks to be the odd man out.

Jackson joined Buffalo in 2012 and is one of the better backups in the league. However, he faces a similar situation as he did a year ago when the Seahawks signed Matt Flynn and drafted Russell Wilson.

Undrafted free agent Jeff Tuel will also challenge for a roster spot. Tuel possesses the physical tools desired in a quarterback and would be an ideal developmental third-stringer.

Handicapping the Bills’ Battle to Be Week 1 Starting Quarterback

The Buffalo Bills have a new coach (Doug Marrone), new offensive and defensive schemes, and new classes of incoming free agents, draft picks, and undrafted rookies coming in to compete for roster spots and playing time.

The most significant of those competitions will come at the quarterback position, where a first-round draft pick (E.J. Manuel), veteran free-agent signing (Kevin Kolb) and returning veteran backup (Tarvaris Jackson) will compete to be next year’s starting signal-caller for the Buffalo Bills.

Recent trends have shifted heavily toward first-round selections at quarterbacks starting immediately as rookies: since 2008, 10 of 15 quarterbacks drafted in Round 1 have been their team’s Week 1 starter.

For this year’s No. 16 overall pick and only first-round quarterback, however, it may not be so clear-cut. Manuel is not nearly as polished of a pocket passer as most first-round quarterbacks, needs time to develop into the franchise quarterback he has the potential to be and will face legitimate competition to earn the job.
