Roster Move Rundown: Buffalo Bills Trim Roster To 50 Players With 5 Cuts

Saturday, August 31st, 2013

The Bills released Thad Lewis on Saturday. Currently, rookies Jeff Tuel and E.J. Manuel are the only two quarterbacks on Buffalo’s roster.

The Buffalo Bills have been busy over the last two days. Dan Hope covered Buffalo’s first 18 cuts from Friday, and today the Bills cut an additional five players to trim their roster to 50 players. Buffalo cutting its roster below 53 players should not be considered a surprise, as the team will add recently released players in an attempt to upgrade its roster. Buffalo could use depth at cornerback and along the offensive line.

Saturday’s cuts provided a few surprises that Dan Hope and I missed on our final 53-man roster projections. It’ll be interesting to see which players the Bills add to their roster in the coming days as the team prepares for their Week 1 matchup against the New England Patriots. Without any further ado, here are Buffalo’s five cuts.

Roster Move Rundown: Buffalo Bills Trim to 55 Players With 18 Cuts, Three To Injured Reserve

With Saturday’s deadline to cut down the roster to the regular-season limit of 53 players, the Buffalo Bills had a busy day Friday. The Bills released 18 players from their roster, while also placing three injured players on the season-ending injured reserve, in order to cut their roster down to 55 players (the roster was at the 75-player limit prior to the 21 moves, but free safety Jairus Byrd’s roster exemption expires Saturday).

The Bills have not made any stunning releases yet, but they have released a few names who both Ryan Talbot and I had on our final roster projections. Conversely, the Bills have a few players still remaining on their roster who neither Ryan nor I expected to make the team.

5 Up, 5 Down: More Disappointments Than Standouts for Buffalo Bills in Loss in Washington

The river of optimism and hope that ran deep throughout Buffalo Bills training camp and over the course of their first two preseason games dried up early on Saturday evening. In their third preseason game, the Bills were embarrassed by the Washington Redskins in our nation’s capital.

Buffalo Bills fans had very little to be excited about in a 30-7 shellacking by a Washington team led by third-string quarterback Rex Grossman and fourth-string quarterback Pat White.

The few optimists that remain after Saturday’s train wreck will cite that this was just a preseason game and the results do not matter. Sadly, while the results of preseason games do not count, they absolutely matter. In my opinion, Buffalo fans received a bit of a flash forward Saturday evening that gives us a realistic look into the 2013 season. The flash forward was not pretty, leaving Bills fans with more questions than answers.

This installment of “5 Up, 5 Down” was difficult. The down part was easy, but finding 5 players who improved their status with the team Saturday was more problematic.

The preseason is halfway over and the Buffalo Bills have some important roster decisions to make in the near future. On Aug. 31, the Bills and all other NFL teams must cut their rosters down to 53 players. While some cuts will be easy, there are plenty of Bills who are currently on the bubble.

Just in case you aren’t familiar with the term, a bubble player is someone on the edge of making the Bills’ regular season roster. Take a look at some of Buffalo’s bubble players, and where I think they currently stand in terms of a final roster spot.

Buffalo Bills Players With Most to Prove vs. Minnesota Vikings

The Buffalo Bills put their best foot forward Sunday, opening the 2013 NFL preseason with a 44-20 victory over the Indianapolis Colts and setting a franchise record for preseason points. Rookie quarterbacks EJ Manuel and Jeff Tuel each played one half, throwing for 315 combined yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Overall, it was an impressive performance for Buffalo and head coach Doug Marrone, but there is still a lot of change on the horizon.

Although many players impressed in their first game action, some were less than stellar. For every player who tried to lay claim to a starting job or a spot on the 53-man roster, there were an equal amount that saw their chances worsen after the first game action.

With that in mind, here are a few players who will come into the second preseason game against Minnesota with even more pressure on their shoulders.
