Considering the way the NFL has become a passing league, running back is not the highly valued position that it once was. With many successful starting running backs having been selected later in the draft in recent years, many teams are no longer valuing running backs as early-round selection.

First round running backs may be a thing of the past and there is no running back in this class with enough value to warrant a first round selection. That said, there are plenty of players who have the skills needed to be starters or at least be a solid complimentary runner.

More times than not, good football players are also good athletes with prototypical physical traits, but being a great athlete and having great size does not necessarily mean one is a great football player. Every year, there are players whose draft stock is defined more by their measurables than what they have actually done on the football field. That is due in large part to NFL teams drafting players based on what they can become rather than who they are.

Joe Marino’s Senior Running Back Rankings for the 2014 NFL Draft

The running back position has decreased in draft value over the past few seasons. NFL teams have been able to find backs later in the draft who prove to be viable starters.

That’s exactly what I see in many of the senior running backs in the 2014 class. Some of them are situational-type players, but most of them are prospects that could fill the role of a starter who gets selected in the later rounds of the draft and proves to be a tremendous value pick.
