He might be best known for his name, but Owamabge Odighizuwa should be recognized for his talent on the field and future in the NFL. An athletic freak out of UCLA, “Diggy” wreaked havoc against offenses this year and put himself in the conversation to be one of the top pass-rushers selected in the 2015 NFL draft.

Odighizuwa recorded six sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss in his senior season, and put on an impressive showing at the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine. He ran a 4.62-second 40-yard dash with a 1.61-second 10-yard split, an impressive time given his 6’3″ height and 267-pound frame.

Odighizuwa played both defensive end and outside linebacker in UCLA’s base 3-4 defense.

This past weekend was the most exciting weekend of college football that I can remember in a long time. This week offers similar intrigue, featuring five games between teams who are both ranked in the top 25. Beyond that, there are several other matchups to keep an eye on with major conference implications.

From an NFL draft perspective, the attention should be on Oregon and UCLA, as two quarterbacks with high first-round aspirations will take center-stage. Before breaking them down, there were some great individual performances from last week to highlight.

Eric Kendricks, who led the UCLA Bruins in tackles and the Pac-12 in tackles per game in 2012 and 2013, is the senior leader for a strong defense which has helped the team start 4-0. A honorable mention all-conference selection and UCLA’s co-captain in 2013, the 6’0″, 230-pound middle linebacker is off to a very strong start this year.

Kendricks was named the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week after a season opener against Virginia in which he totaled 16 tackles, forced a fumble (returned for a touchdown by a teammate) and returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown. In total, Kendricks has already accumulated 47 total tackles this season.

2014 NFL Draft: 10 Prospects Whose Tools Are Better Than Their Tape

Wednesday, March 19th, 2014

More times than not, good football players are also good athletes with prototypical physical traits, but being a great athlete and having great size does not necessarily mean one is a great football player. Every year, there are players whose draft stock is defined more by their measurables than what they have actually done on the football field. That is due in large part to NFL teams drafting players based on what they can become rather than who they are.

Monday’s on-field portion of the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine featured the draft’s best defensive line and linebacker prospects as the depth of the draft continued to prove itself in workouts. While no prospect was able to officially record a sub-4.5 second 40-yard dash, there was plenty of speed and athleticism on display alongside a few disappointments.
