If you’re a Buffalo Bills fan, there was a lot to be excited about in the team’s season-opening game versus the New England Patriots.

Between the second and third quarters, the Bills clearly had the game’s momentum, and outscored the Patriots 21-7 in that span. The defense showed significant strides from last season, making numerous stands in goal-to-go defense and coming up with three takeaways off which they scored 14 points. Rookie quarterback EJ Manuel had a very solid debut, completing 18 of 27 passes for 150 yards and leading two touchdown drives while throwing no interceptions.

The Bills lost the game, however, because they started and ended poorly. The Bills were outscored 16-0 in the first and fourth quarters, giving up two scoring drives in each quarter. They failed to sustain any offensive momentum in both quarters, and the Patriots — specifically wide receivers Danny Amendola and Julian Edelman, and running back Shane Vereen — made enough plays down the stretch to set up two field goals on the Patriots’ final three series.

While the Bills certainly must overcome their inability to close out the victory, putting themselves in position for said victory was an impressive start for head coach Doug Marrone, Manuel and the Bills’ defense.

FINAL SCORE: Patriots 23, Bills 21.

FINAL THOUGHTS: The Buffalo Bills played a tight game against the New England Patriots, but their failure to stop the Patriots on third downs down the stretch is what ultimately cost them the game. With five seconds remaining, Stephen Gostkowski connected on a 35-yard field goal to seal the game for the Patriots.

The Bills themselves have a lot to feel good about, but a loss is a loss. The Bills fall to 0-1 on the season. Next week the Bills play against the Carolina Panthers (0-1).

Football season is upon us. After the Baltimore Ravens and Denver Broncos opened the NFL regular season Thursday night, the rest of the league is ready to take its turn.

No one should be more welcome to see the end of the NFL preseason more than the Buffalo Bills, whose training camp and preseason included injuries to top cornerback Stephon Gilmore, top defensive playmaker and free safety Jairus Byrd, top wide receiver Stevie Johnson and a possible career-ending injury to quarterback Kevin Kolb.

While Johnson is ready for the start of the season, the rest will all be on the sidelines (Byrd is listed as doubtful on the team’s injury report) when the Bills take the field against their AFC East rivals, the New England Patriots, on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

The Buffalo Bills announced Saturday afternoon that rookie quarterback E.J. Manuel will miss the remainder of the preseason. Manuel had swelling in his left knee and is undergoing a minor procedure to fix the problem. According to FOX Sports’ Peter Schrager, Manuel had the procedure on Sunday morning and does not need crutches, but will be out 2-4 weeks.

The injury came at a time where Manuel was extending his lead in the quarterback competition. Now, everything has changed.

What does Manuel’s injury mean to the Bills?
