First Downs and Flags: Buffalo Loses to Atlanta Falcons in Typical Bills Fashion

The Buffalo Bills were attempting to make a playoff push going into their Week 13 matchup with the Atlanta Falcons. Getting help from other AFC teams to keep them within reach of the conference’s sixth playoff speed, they had a chance to keep a playoff run alive with a win Sunday, but they did not.

Beyond the Blame Game, Loss to Atlanta Falcons Shows Buffalo Bills Don’t Belong in Playoffs

Sunday, December 1st, 2013

While the Buffalo Bills have lost eight games, including two in overtime and four by seven points or less, it seems no loss this season (at least judging off the tweets in my timeline and in my mentions) has been a tougher pill for Buffalo fans to swallow than the team’s 34-31 overtime loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

This sentiment from the Bills fan base comes understandably, both because of the implications and manner of the loss. As the defeat drops Buffalo to 4-8 on the season, it puts a stake through the heart of the Bills’ slim playoff hopes. But the loss might be an especially tough pill to swallow because this was not a game Buffalo lost decidedly, but rather let slip away on the verge of victory.

As has been the case in many losses this season for the Bills, late-game penalties and mistakes proved costly. But it is unfair and inaccurate to pinpoint blame for Buffalo’s loss, and furthermore its failure to make the postseason, on those responsible for calling those penalties and making those mistakes.

Buffalo Bills vs. Atlanta Falcons: Week 13 Live Game Thread

FINAL THOUGHTS: Yes, the crowd in Toronto was pathetic. Yes, the referees made several questionable calls that cost the Bills yards and points. Yes, the Bills should have won this game.

However, when everything was on the line, we saw the same ol’ Bills. The Bills who haven’t made the playoffs since 1999 had a chance to win in regulation.

Stevie Johnson took an EJ Manuel pass to the Falcons 30 before having the ball stripped out. If Johnson simply falls to the turf, Buffalo can run the clock down and set up a chip shot field goal for Dan Carpenter. Instead, Johnson carried the ball loosely and had it stripped. The play cost the Bills an attempt to win in regulation, but the defense did their job and sent it to overtime.

After winning the coin toss in overtime, EJ Manuel found Scott Chandler for 22 yards on 2nd and 7. The Bills would have had the ball on their own 45 yard line but Chandler, just like Johnson, had the ball stripped out. While Chandler attempted to protect the ball more than Johnson, he still found a way to cough it up.

It only took Atlanta four plays to drive the ball to Buffalo’s 17 yard line. In a dome, a 36 yard field goal is pretty much an extra point. Buffalo lost to the woeful Atlanta Falcons and once again we’re stuck talking about next year and the NFL draft.

Let’s face the facts. the Toronto series is a failure for the actual Buffalo Bills team. Yes, the deal brings in a ton of money, but today, in a game that mattered for the Bills, there were more Falcons fans in attendance. It’s inexcusable that Buffalo is literally finding itself playing nine away games a year. The Bills are now 1-5 in the series.

It’s so frustrating and heartbreaking to be a Bills fan. Every team that needed to lose today did. The Jets? Smashed by the Dolphins. The Browns? Upset by the Jaguars. The Titans? No Fitzmagic to bring them back against Indianapolis. The Bengals also defeated the Chargers.

However, it was the same ol’ Bills today. Even though other games worked in their favor, the team couldn’t defeat an inferior moment when it mattered.

There’s plenty of young talent on this team and the coaching staff has me optimistic about their future but we can chalk up the 2013 season to the same ol’ Bills.

Fresh and Rested, Buffalo Bills Travel to Toronto to Face Atlanta Falcons in Week 13

The push for the NFL playoffs has begun in earnest with Week 13 underway. It was a party that seemed to exclude the Buffalo Bills after they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 10, but after a win against the New York Jets in Week 11 and with losses by the Jets and Miami Dolphins in Week 12, the Bills are, even at 4-7, only one loss out of the AFC’s final playoff spot with one of the easiest schedules remaining among the nine teams in the wild card race.

The Buffalo Bills need to run the table for a realistic playoff push, however, so the quest for the postseason must start with a win against an Atlanta Falcons team that won 13 games and played in the NFC Championship last year. Injuries have ravaged them this year and led them to a disastrous 2-9 start, but they are still not a team the Bills should overlook.
